Dom’s past includes the classical cello, followed by most kinds of guitar and playing bass in jazz funk bands. He also co-wrote and performed with Nitin Sawhney/Trilok Gurtu veteran Sanchita Farruque. After a stint signed to Revco Records he started writing music commercially, and was hired by theatre director Robert Delamere as his composer for the stage, writing the scores for plays performed at the Donmar Warehouse, the Hampstead Theatre, Liverpool Everyman and the National Theatre of Craoiva. This experience stood him in good stead for composing subsequent scores for large-scale events such as Zoomorphic at the V&A and Zurich Bank’s extravaganzas in the Arizona desert. In the meantime his roster of clients for TV idents, corporate films and advertising grew, and he diversified into composing scores for short films.
Inspired by his extended scores for theatre and short film, and his collaborations with CHROMA, Dom is working increasingly with live musicians (and continuing to use technology at the highest level). His interest in the intricate influences different musical traditions have on each other, and the fusion of live performance and technology can be seen in his choice of projects, which include cross-art form events combining video/installation and live performance, and more pieces written for pioneering chamber musicians.
With a large body of commercial projects behind him, Dom still composes for TV and advertising – expanding from his largely UK client case to include a series of TV projects in the Middle East, predominately Saudi Arabia. He has also recently started writing for the acclaimed chamber ensemble CHROMA, with his piece “The Longing” for string trio premiered in 2009 and a new piece for tango sextet premiering in June 2010.
